Virginia Tech is located in Blacksburg, Virginia. It offers 65 bachelor's degree programs and 150 master's and doctoral degree programs. In 2010, Virginia Tech ranks 47th in the nation in research expenditures according to the National Science Foundation. The Hokie Bird is the university mascot.

Program of Study
A New Student Checklist before Arrivals
  1. Accept your Admission to Virginia Tech by paying your matriculation deposit.

  2. Pay SEVIS I-901 fee.

  3. Make a Visa appointment at the United States’ consulate office in your home country.

  4. Prepare for your Visa interview.

  5. Read the Pre-Arrival brochure in your acceptance packet.

  6. Create your Virginia Tech PID

  7. Submit your Housing/Dining Contract through HokieSpa

  8. Have a health care provider in your home country complete the Health History and Immunization Form 

  9. Purchase health insurance. It is required for F and J visa holders to have insurance that meets the university’s requirements beginning the first day of class.  Open enrollment for the university sponsored plan, Aetna, begins July 22.  Students must either purchase Aetna or submit an International Student Medical Insurance Waiver Form by September 13. For more information contact Student Medical Insurance at smi@vt.edu

  10. Request an Official Copy of your transcript.

  11. Plan transportation to Virginia Tech.

  12. Temporary Housing Arrangements in Blacksburg, Virginia.  Students living in Residence Halls should be prepared to stay in temporary housing for several days before the residence halls open on August 19.  Reservations can be made online for On Campus Temporary housing which will be available from July 29 – August 19.  There are also local hotels in Blacksburg for temporary accommodations.

  13. Complete Pre-Arrival Online Orientation – This mandatory orientation will include important information about tasks you need to complete before you come to Virginia Tech, getting to and arriving in Blacksburg, what to expect in your first few months in the US, and how the Cranwell International Center will support you during your time here.  You will be expected to complete this orientation by August 19.  Log into your Scholar account (https://scholar.vt.edu/portal) to access this orientation.

  14. Register Online for a Document Check-in Session at the Cranwell International Center to receive information regarding university procedures.

  15. Register Online for International Undergraduate Orientation, mandatory unless you have attended a Summer Orientation through New Student Programs.

A New Student Checklist after Arrivals
  1. Attend Document Check-In Session at the Cranwell International Center. During your Document Check-In Session we will collect your Health History and Immunization Forms, copy your immigration documents, and give you some important resources to help welcome you to Virginia Tech.

  2. Get your student ID card (Hokie Passport) in the Hokie Passport Office: 100 Student Services Building (231-5121)

  3. Complete Pre-Arrival Online Orientation – You will be expected to complete this orientation by August 19.  Log into your Scholar account to access this orientation.

  4. Review the Orientation Calendar here: http://virginiatechinternational.wordpress.com/calendar/, some events do require preregistration.

  5. Pick up residence hall key from Harper Hall on August 19 between 8am-5pm.

  6. Attend International Undergraduate Orientation on August 20 at 8am in Squires Student Center–During this time you will get to know the Virginia Tech campus, meet your academic advisor, and register for classes.

  7. Pick up Software Bundle from the Student Software Distribution office located on the third floor of Torgerson Hall between August 21 – August 25 from 8am-5pm

  8. Attend Immunization and Health History Review Appointment (You will receive thisappointment card at your Document Check In Session) on Wednesday, August 21.

  9. Print a copy of your I-94 card here: https://i94.cbp.dhs.gov/I94/request.html (enter your name as printed your passport) and bring a copy to the Mandatory Immigration Session on Saturday, August 24, 10am-12pm.F Visa Holders – Colonial Hall (Squires Student Center)J Visa Holders – Graduate Life Center (GLC) Multipurpose Room

  10. Pay your tuition bill – After you register for classes, a bill will be generated. You can review all the charges and amount due on Hokie SPA. Check your account balance and pay by August 30. Contact the University Bursar’s Office– 150 Student Services Building (231-6277) if you have any questions.
